Enviro-friendly magazine launching in Wanaka ~ 09 Aug 2018
A new magazine to be launched in Wanaka early next month will celebrate where and what local people are doing for the planet and its people.
EC magazine is the brainchild of local group Earth Collective Aotearoa Ltd.
Magazine founder Florence Micoud said the free publication will feature local people, groups, initiatives, events, knowledge and tips, with a focus on “caring for the environment, water, biodiversity, soil, air, and health”.
The magazine will also feature regular columns written by local experts on gardening in this climate, wellbeing and maori kaitiakitanga (stewardship).
“As we talk to people and businesses about this magazine, it confirms how valuable it will be to connect people interested in caring for the environment, creating a community of like-minded people and businesses,” Florence told the Wanaka App. “The magazine is a unique opportunity to showcase what we are doing well and [how we can] improve.”
The magazine operates on a model which asks for written contributions. People are invited to send in tips, post features and share knowledge.
“The magazine is written by people, we are just enabling it,” Florence said. “So go to the website and share your stewardship with the community.”
The publication will be funded by advertising. Florence said businesses are invited to demonstrate their stewardship with a “7 icons model”, where “icons” are awarded for criteria met for recycling, earth-friendly practices, protecting water, ethical choices, caring for the environment, energy saving and smart travel.
Florence said the magazine’s regular columns are ready, and “our pages are filling well”, but said more advertising is still needed.
Printed in colour on eco-paper using vegetable inks, the first magazine is due to be delivered free to up to 5,000 letterboxes in Wanaka, Hawea and Luggate on Wednesday September 5.
